Save on Energy Bills with Spray Foam Insulation
There are two primary types of spray polyurethane foam: open cell and closed cell. Open cell foam is made up of small bubbles that aren’t completely encapsulated, which makes it softer and more pliable than closed cell spray foam. It can be installed in basement rim joists, crawl spaces, overhangs (or cantilevers), knee walls and bonus rooms.
Both spray foam insulation types emit off-gassing fumes while curing, which must be directed outside using ventilation. Spray foam contractors wear masks and respirators during application to avoid inhaling these harmful fumes.
As the phase-down of HFCs continues, more and more manufacturers are offering reformulated versions of their spray foam products that have much lower global warming potential. Texas-based Demilec, for example, is one manufacturer with distribution across the U.S. and Canada now offering a medium-density closed-cell spray foam called Solstice LBA. The reformulated product is free of HFCs and instead uses a blowing agent with a low-GWP. The lower GWP makes these newer spray foams eligible for use in states and countries that have begun to ban the older HFCs.
