Knotweed Identification – How to Tell the Difference

Knotweed Identification

Japanese knotweed is the most common invasive species of this weed, growing up to three meters tall. It has narrow, hollow stems that look similar to bamboo. The leaves are dark green, tapered and have short hairs on their veins and edges. The leaf bases are heart-shaped or tapered. The plant flowers in mid-late autumn. The flowers are white or pink in color and are borne in loose branched clusters, each 20 to 35cm (8-14 inches) long.

The silver-sheathed knotweed is usually erect, with long spikes that are rose-colored. It is often confused with garden spurge, because it exudes a milky substance when broken, unlike knotweed. Both plants grow in dry, hard-packed soil and prefer to grow in areas of heavy foot traffic. They can also be found in cracks and turf areas, and can cause damage to your lawn and garden.
